What Happens to the Gums with Dentures?

Posted on 6/25/2019 by Dr. Karl Zeren
What Happens to the Gums with Dentures?Getting dentures can be a great step forward for many people. After the initial adjustment period, many denture wearers can return to enjoying foods that they once loved.

In addition, a pair of properly fashioned and fitted dentures can add tremendously to your appearance, and you will likely find yourself becoming more comfortable in social situations.

However, dentures can have an impact on your gum tissue, particularly if they do not fit properly. Understanding what dentures can do to your gums is important so you can take the necessary steps to keep your dentures fitting properly.

Loose Dentures Can Cause Sores

One of the most common issues with dentures that are too loose is the sore spots on the gum tissue that can develop. When the denture slides around, it will rub on the gum tissue. This can cause sore spots and even ulcerations.

Another cause of sore spots on the gum tissue is using a denture that is not fitted properly and which pushes harder on certain areas of the gums. A denture that fits correctly should evenly distribute the pressure that comes with chewing. If a set of dentures does not fit well, the result can be intense pressure in some spots—and very little pressure in others. The result can be sore spots on the gum tissue.

Poor Hygiene Can Cause Problems

It is absolutely vital that you regularly remove and clean your dentures. If you do not, it is possible for small pieces of food and other detritus to become lodged underneath the dentures. This can lead to obvious issues such as bad breath, but it can also cause infections in the gum tissue.

If you have dentures, you will find them to be useful. However, be aware of the necessity of keeping them fitting properly and engaging in regular oral hygiene practices.

We appreciate all that you do
