Do Gums Benefit from Oil Pulling?Oil pulling has greatly increased in popularity in recent years. This is due to a number of factors, including increased access to the necessary elements and more available information on the Internet. We frequently hear questions about this practice, and about whether it can help the gum tissue.

What is Oil Pulling?


Oil pulling is the practice of swishing around some oil in your mouth for a period of time and then spitting it out. Although people use different oils, depending on what they are trying to accomplish, one of the most popular oils for this is coconut oil.

Some people who practice oil pulling may add other elements to the oil, such as a pinch of cinnamon. This enhances the flavor of the oil and can provide other benefits as well.

What Oil Pulling Can (and Cannot) Do for Your Gums


Some people who engage in oil pulling believe that the practice will draw various toxins out of the body and in so doing improve their overall health. While there is not a great deal of scientific evidence to back up these claims, oil pulling is not without benefit.

Many oils have antibacterial properties. This means they can help you reduce the level of bacteria living in your mouth. This is always a good thing, and in this sense oil pulling can definitely help in keeping your gum tissue healthy.

However, oil pulling is not a miracle cure, and it certainly should not replace your regular oral hygiene routine. Oil pulling is absolutely not a substitute for brushing and flossing, as some people claim.

All things considered, oil pulling is a practice that can help you; however, if you neglect your other oral hygiene practices because of your reliance on oil pulling, it can harm you in the long run. As such, if you choose to practice oil pulling, be sure to continue your other hygiene practices as well.
