Caring for Your Gums Following a Graft

Posted on 5/20/2019 by Dr. Karl Zeren
Caring for Your Gums Following a GraftDid you recently undergo a gum graft, or are you about to? Then it is very important you know what recovery is like. Plus, you need to make sure you know how to care for your mouth so that it can completely recover.

If you are not careful about how you set up your recovery, it could take longer than anticipated, or it could fail. Neither of these is an ideal situation. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you care properly for your gums following any type of gum graft.

Your Gums Need Gentle TLC

First, you need to remember that you have to keep your mouth clean, but you also need to be gentle when you do so. We will explain how to clean your mouth when you have the graft done, so make sure to follow our instructions carefully. Just when you go in to brush, floss, and rinse your mouth, make sure you do so with care. Second, make sure to use salt water rinses as often as you need. They help speed up healing, plus the salt helps remove extra bacteria from your mouth, which helps to keep the area cleaner. On top of that, it also helps reduce pain naturally.

Third, make sure you watch what you eat. Eating something that is salty to the extreme, spicy, sharp, or sticky could be a problem. It could leave you in pain, plus it could also damage the new tissue if it sticks or digs beneath the edges of the graft.

If you have any problems with your gum graft after it is done, call us. We can explain what things are normal to expect, and which things are something we need to take a look at. Just make sure you keep the area clean first and foremost.

We appreciate all that you do
