Will a Water Flosser Alone Prevent Gum Disease?

Posted on 3/30/2019 by Dr. Karl Zeren
Will a Water Flosser Alone Prevent Gum Disease?Gum disease is a serious dental problem that can cause numerous problems with your teeth. It can also cause problems that affect systems other than your teeth. For example, if you have Type-II Diabetes, you have problems with wound healing. Untreated gum disease, in this case, can lead to gangrene if it isn't treated promptly.

Gum disease is prevented by regular brushing and flossing. Many people have trouble flossing properly and for those people, traditional flossing may not prevent gum disease. You may need a more modern flossing method such as a water flosser.

What Is a Water Flosser?

Water flossers are designed much like electric toothbrushes and are about the same size. Instead of having a string that you rub between each tooth, a water flosser sprays a stream of pulsating water in between your teeth. As with traditional floss, the water flosser removes food particles from between your teeth. This reduces the chance for bacteria to form and cause tooth decay. The American Dental Association has approved them for safety and effectiveness.

Water flossers are a great alternative for people who are unable to use traditional floss. Traditional floss can be ineffective, particularly for people with teeth that overlap or teeth that are very close together. Traditional floss can't always get into these spaces effectively. The pulsating water of a water flosser has a better chance at this.

Is a Water Flosser All Need?

The short answer is no. A water flosser, though effective, cannot prevent gum disease alone. The same is true of traditional flosses. Water flossers can reduce the early forms of gum disease that are signaled by bleeding or swelling gums, but they can't prevent gum disease alone. Water flossers produce the same results that traditional floss does. The greatest advantage is that the water flosser can be used by the people that are unable to use traditional floss.
