Can Receding Gums Grow Back?

Posted on 2/28/2019 by Dr. Karl Zeren
Can Receding Gums Grow Back?Your teeth are surrounded by the jaw bone and when this bone starts losing its minerals, the gum tissue cannot support the teeth properly and part of it becomes exposed. The gum tissue becomes vulnerable to recession and without this support to keep the bone in place, there are more chances the gums can recede without proper treatment.

Do Gums Grow Back?

Depending on how advanced the condition is, the answer can be negative. If you haven't taken care of the problem with treatment, once the gum tissue is gone and can no longer support the teeth, the condition cannot be reversed. However, dentistry is always improving with new scientific advances and every patient is different, so we encourage you to schedule a visit and we will do a thorough examination.

What Can I Do to Prevent Gum Disease?

The best thing you can do to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral health at home and keep your regular dental visits. We can spot any problems early on and there are treatments available at the onset.

Nutrition is also a key factor that many people ignore. Eating healthy foods that contain important vitamins and minerals your mouth benefits from is, perhaps, the most important thing you can do along with having good dental hygiene.

A study published in the Journal of Dental Research, found that 47-percent of 30-year-olds and over 70-percent of 65-year-olds, have periodontal disease, which is caused by the bacteria in plaque that sticks to your teeth shortly after you brush and can lead to gum disease.

Other conditions can also contribute to the onset of gum disease are, Bruxism – the clenching or grinding of the teeth, genetics, or trauma.

Even though receding gums, in general, cannot grow back to their previous levels, there are always ways in which your bones can remineralize and prevent you from losing your teeth. Reach out to us to find out more!
