What You Will Notice if Your Gums Need GraftingAs you come in for your regular dental visit, we may tell you that your gums need grafting. If you're wondering what this procedure is used for, here is some more information to help you feel confident in your treatment.

Receding Gum Tissue

Ideally, your gum tissue will always be as high up on the tooth as it is supposed to be. This helps keep the tooth firmly in place, and protects the sensitive root tissue. However, over the years, you may sometimes see evidence of gum recession. Sometimes this takes place as a result of periodontal disease; others, it could be from something such as using a toothbrush with bristles that are too firm.

Whatever the cause, you will probably notice some things in your mouth. One thing you may notice is an increase in the size of the gaps between your teeth. This is because the tissue is shrinking back, making the teeth appear to be larger than they used to.

Another thing you may notice is an increased sensitivity to heat, cold, and mechanical stimulation such as brushing your teeth. The reason for this is that, as the gum tissue recedes, the part of your tooth that is exposed may not have the same durable enamel protection that the rest of the tooth does. As a result, you may notice increased sensitivity.

In extreme cases you may be able to visually see gaps between your gum tissue and the tooth; other times, you'll simply notice it as you floss your teeth. Regardless of how you identify it, if you need gum grafting, please do not hesitate to talk with us about the procedure.

We're happy to explain the process and help alleviate any fears you may be having. We'll answer all your questions and make sure you know what to expect, and how you should go about recovering from the process. We will make sure that you are ready for the recovery.
