About Growth Factors
Posted on 12/3/2017 by Dr. Karl Zeren
Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) is a naturally occurring protein found in human bone. This protein is a type of growth factor known for its ability to stimulate the regenerative mechanism of bone, and induce the formation of bone at the site in which it is placed. It functions as a biologic mediator that regulates critical cellular activities, including migration, proliferation and differentiation of bone forming cells. This process includes the attraction of the patient’s own bone-generating cells into the site where it is placed. In fact, BMPs are the only known proteins capable of inducing new bone formation. BMP has been studied for decades and has been extensively used in orthopedic surgery for several years.
